September 3, 2024The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported Tuesday that the 28th fatality in the United States since 2009 has been caused by a defective Takata airbag.
The problem has led to the largest recall in U.S. history. More than 100 million vehicles with Takata airbag inflators have been recalled worldwide in the past decade, including 67 million in the United States.
The agency said the confirmation was based on new information provided by Honda Motor 7267.TThe fatal accident occurred in 2018 in Alabama involving a Honda vehicle, which left the driver fatally injured.
According to the NHTSA, “even minor crashes can result in Takata airbags deploying, which can be fatal or cause life-changing, horrific injuries.”
Since 2009, hundreds of injuries have also been reported in vehicles from various automakers due to Takata airbags. These can explode and send metal shards flying into cars and trucks, injuring or killing drivers or other occupants.
Honda said Tuesday it has now confirmed 20 U.S. deaths in Honda and Acura vehicles. The company said it has replaced or accounted for more than 95% of the recalled Takata pumps, but “remains committed to replacing or accounting for all remaining pumps.”
The airbag problems are attributed to propellant gas, which can break down after prolonged exposure to wide temperature fluctuations and humidity.
A number of automakers have this year urged owners of older vehicles to stop driving until they replace Takata airbags.
